Ross Tapsell of the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University in Canberra has just published an essay “The Media Freedom Movement in Malaysia and the Electoral Authoritarian regime” in the Journal of Contemporary Asia. One of the objectives of the article is to understand the specific nature of the larger political system in which the media operates which he terms “electoral authoritarianism”. He also seeks to understand how new technologies like the Internet have spurred on the movement for a free media.
